Resume Do’s and Don’ts

Writing your resume can be a difficult and intimidating task. Here are some suggestions that can help you prepare a winning resume.

  • Determine your job search objective before writing your resume.
  • Think of your resume as a marketing tool. Strive to be clear and concise.
  • Use your resume to obtain an interview, not a job.
  • Use bulleted sentences rather than lengthy paragraphs.
  • Use #’s, $’s and %’s. They stand out in the body of a resume.
  • Lead with your strengths since resumes are normally reviewed in about 30 seconds.
  • Use buzzwords that show your competence but refrain from using industry slang.
  • Accent the positive and leave off negatives and irrelevant points.
  • Prepare your resume to demonstrate your breadth of knowledge rather than focusing on one area.
  • Construct your resume to read easily.
  • Include relevant dates of employment.
  • Include your job duties, but don’t leave out your accomplishments.
  • Leave off personal information that is not relevant to your job search.
  • Write short, east-to-read statements about your skills, experience, and abilities.
  • Don’t be long-winded. Focus on grabbing the reader’s attention quickly.
  • Proofread your resume several times before submittal.
